Recently, China's 42nd Antarctic expedition "Snow Dragon", an icebreaker for polar scientific research, returned to Shanghai, and the expedition team successfully completed various tasks as planned. This investigation is an important scientific investigation completed in the first year of the Tenth Five-Year Plan in China, and has made new breakthroughs in major project construction, scientific research investigation and monitoring, testing and application of independent equipment, and international cooperation.
When reviewing the results of the 42nd Antarctic expedition in China, the Ministry of Natural Resources pointed out: "The new inland cabin independently developed by China successfully completed the field test and application, effectively improving the field operation support capability."

This officially praised "new modular mobile Antarctic inland cabin" (referred to as modular polar cabin) was independently developed by China Construction Third Bureau under China Construction Group and polar research institute of china. It integrated mature technologies in the early stage and was iteratively upgraded. It was successfully deployed and put into use in the Grove Mountain area during the 42nd Antarctic expedition.
After more than 50 days of on-site application, the modular polar cabin crossed the complex ice inland over 800 kilometers, which not only significantly improved the working and living environment of the expedition team members, but also effectively ensured the safety of life. Meanwhile, key environmental data such as solar irradiation, extreme wind speed, temperature and humidity along the way were collected synchronously, which enriched the continuous observation data samples of multi-factor environment along the inland of the Southeast Pole, and laid a solid foundation for the subsequent technical iteration of polar modular buildings and the formulation of national standards. As the representative work of China Construction Third Bureau's third expedition to the Antarctic, the modular polar cabin integrates the mature technology in the early stage and upgrades iteratively, which has become another major breakthrough in improving the field support capability of China's Antarctic.
On the eve of the Spring Festival in the Year of the Horse in the third lunar month, the 42nd Antarctic expedition of China sent a congratulatory letter to China Construction Third Bureau and China Institute of Advanced Building Technology, which highly affirmed the important role played by enterprises in task organization, team building and key technical support.
01 March-stay dual mode, the vast ice field stays with you.
The modular polar cabin breaks the geographical limitation of the traditional fixed research station and realizes the rapid switching between the two modes of team travel and camp residence.

△ travel mode
In the traveling mode, the module is in the form of an end-to-end motorcade, which can follow the scientific research motorcade across the ice sheet and snowfield; In the resident mode, each module is connected through a low-temperature resistant flexible connection tunnel, which is quickly spliced and connected to form a field camp.

△ Resident mode
At the same time, the modular polar cabin relies on the self-developed low-temperature light storage integrated energy system of -40℃ to realize the independent supply of stable and clean energy at all times; The application of new sled transport vehicles can greatly reduce the transport failure rate under bumpy road conditions. This system has effectively expanded the investigation radius and supported the long-distance scientific research work in the Antarctic inland.
The living function is perfect, and it can be as warm as spring at-40 C.
The modular polar cabin adopts self-developed high-efficiency thermal control fresh air circulation system and high thermal insulation enclosure system, which can maintain the indoor comfortable temperature of 18-22℃ in the extreme low temperature environment of -40℃ in the Antarctic inland.

The module integrates a number of standardized functional units, and is equipped with many original technologies such as waterless ecological toilet and intelligent snowmelt shower system, which systematically solves the pain points such as "difficulty in bathing and going to the toilet" that have long plagued the Antarctic inland field trip, bringing more comfortable, convenient and humanized support for polar scientific researchers.
With the support of the whole industrial chain, the iteration will never stop.

The modular polar cabin adopts standard building units, independent functional modules and unified module interfaces, which can realize rapid on-site assembly, shorten the construction period by more than 90% compared with the traditional fixed research station, and greatly reduce the difficulty and cost of construction, operation and maintenance. In the follow-up, it can be freely combined and flexibly expanded according to the personnel scale and functional requirements of different scientific research tasks, and new functional modules such as scientific research experiment, medical rescue and energy supply can be added to realize iterative upgrading in the whole life cycle.
Relying on the self-developed modular building design agent's generative design, modular building technology system, self-owned factory and product innovation iteration mechanism, the team has built the whole industrial chain capability of modular building in extreme environment, and the products have landed in more than 40 projects in high altitude and polar regions.

△ Two generations of Kunlun Station "Polar Scientific Research Pressurized Building"
Since 2018, the China Institute of Advanced Building Technology under the China Construction Third Bureau, led by Kun Chang, the chief expert of China Construction Group, has set up an R&D team for extreme human settlements to develop a high-altitude supercharged building-"zero-altitude house", and to build a modular "good house on the plateau" with the concept of "supercharged anti-high reaction". In 2023, the pressurized building for polar scientific research was derived, and it arrived at China Antarctic Kunlun Station with an altitude of 4,087 meters, an average annual temperature of -52.5℃ and a lowest temperature of-83.1 C for two consecutive years, thus solving the scientific research support problem under the conditions of high altitude and extreme cold. In 2025, relying on the mature modular building system and high thermal insulation technology system, it will be further expanded into an unpressurized modular polar cabin to serve the Antarctic inland scientific research, and realize the comprehensive support of the Antarctic scientific research from altitude to geographical breadth.
From the "zero-altitude house" on the plateau to the pressurized building for polar scientific research, and now to the modular polar cabin with complete functions, for many years, the R&D team has always taken science and technology as the blade to face the extreme environmental challenges. In the future, this ingenuity and persistence of deep-rooted polar engineering technology innovation will continue, escorting scientific research with hard-core technology and building a warm and reliable solid barrier for exploring the unknown with China Construction.
